For over fifteen (15) years Alexis Tracy has served as a prosecuting attorney. Her experience includes prosecuting felony matters in circuit court, working with the Department of Social Services to prosecute abuse and neglect cases in juvenile court, handling juvenile CHINS and delinquency matters, as well as criminal matters in district magistrate court. Tracy is an experienced trial attorney in both court trial and jury trial capacities. She is well-versed in selection and presentation of matters to the grand jury, as well as preliminary hearings, motion hearings, and brief writing. Tracy also prioritizes the responsibilities of the State’s Attorney’s office in providing support to the county with the civil matters including: property tax appeals, indigent matters, and zoning issues.
Tracy received her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota in 2003 and her Juris Doctorate from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 2006. She was Deputy State’s Attorney for Union County as well as a part-time Deputy State’s Attorney for Turner County prior to being elected State’s Attorney for Clay County in 2016 and reelected in 2020.
Tracy currently serves as President of the South Dakota State’s Attorney’s Association; she has served on the Legislative Committee for the Association since 2007. Tracy was appointed to the South Dakota Open Meetings Commission by South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg in 2019. Tracy has been an active member of local Child Protection Teams in Union and Clay Counties while serving as a prosecutor in those communities. Tracy is also a member of the National District Attorney’s Association.
Tracy is a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Tracy has been a volunteer teacher for Junior Achievement Excellence Through Ethics in Vermillion since 2013. She served as a volunteer for the Judiciary Branch for South Dakota Girl’s State from 2008-2019. She was a guest lecturer for the South Dakota Drafting and Legal Practice course at USD Law School in 2017 and 2018.
